CIVITAS DESTINATIONS @ EUSEW Policy Conference, Brussels, June 2019

CIVITAS DESTINATIONS presented the collective efforts of 16 European cities towards sustainable mobility at the session “Innovative Mobility Solutions shaping Europe’s Energy Future”, which took part on June 18th, 2019, in the frame of the EUSEW Policy Conference in Brussels.

The purpose of the session, organised by CIVITAS DESTINATIONS and the European Commission, was to raise awareness on the significance of reducing energy and fuel use by the transport sector as a whole and thus make an important contribution to the fight against climate change. Behavioural change towards more sustainable means of transport was also discussed.

Sustainable Energy and Mobility experts, among which Professor Theocharis Tsoutsos from ReSEL-TUC, presented the collective efforts of 16 European cities (including Stockholm, Madrid, Antwerp, Funchal, Limassol, Rethymno, Munich, Aberdeen and Trieste) towards sustainable mobility. The 16 cities participate in 3 CIVITAS Innovation Action projects, DESTINATIONS, PORTIS & ECCENTRIC.

The interactive 90-minute session kicked-off with keynote speeches by Melanie Schade, Vice President EPOMM and Dr Axel Volkery Policy Coordinator, Clean Transport, DG MOVE.

The interactive session that followed focused on the role of sustainable mobility in reducing energy use and GHG emissions centred around the following five themes:

  • Clean fuels and e-mobility to insular cities. Challenges and drivers
  • Mobility as a Service (MaaS): the example of the Elba Shared Mobility Agency
  • Energy savings in ports and port cities through behavioural change – The PORTIS approach
  • Charging infrastructure and test e-fleets: concrete actions to prepare for electric mobility – the ECCENTRIC approach
  • European islands as testbeds of innovative mobility solutions for citizens and tourists alike - the DESTINATIONS approach

The audience had the chance to participate and contribute through a series of targeted and focused questions and finally closing remarks were addressed to mobility practitioners and policy makers.
