ReSEL @ “Sustainable Urban Mobility: Prospects and opportunities”, Karditsa, March 2019

The event was organized by the Municipality of Karditsa with the support of the CIVINET CY-EL network, The Technical Chamber of Greece - Central and Western Thessaly and the Greek Organization of General Secretaries of the Local Government Cleisthenes.

The director of ReSEL, Professor Theocharis Tsoutsos participated through Skype, and presented best practices for sustainable mobility and sustainable tourism based on the experience gained from the Horizon 2020 project, CIVITAS DESTINATIONS. The project aims to an integrated approach to address mobility and tourism and achieve sustainable development and a better quality of life for six European insular cities, with Rethymno -Crete being among them.

Within the frame of CIVITAS DESTINATIONS the city of Rethymno is shaping a road safety and sustainable mobility culture for the next generations, with increased road safety and a modal shift towards sustainable transportation with mobility plans to improve mobility and enable safe walking and cycling. Moreover an operational scheme for implementing a full Used Cooking Oil (UCO)-to-biodiesel chain has been defined at municipal level, and a new mobility strategy to further improve accessibility for all and to meet the needs of disabled people. Finally Rethymno launched the first dockless e-bike sharing system in Greece with 300 e-bikes, available for citizens and visitors, the first municipal e-vehicle and installed the first public EV charging stations in Crete.

Speaches were also given by: Kalliopi Papadaki-Civil Engineer-partner of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and National Coordinator of Sustainable Mobility, Thanos Vlastos-Professor of Urban & Transport Planning at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)-School of Surveying Enginnering-Department of Geography and Regional Planning,  Efthimios Bakogiannis Urban & Transport Engineer at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Anastasia Trampa-Political Engineer-Urban & Transport Planning- partner of the Laboratory of Spatial and Urban Planning of the University of Thessaly and Anastasios Papadimitriou –Responsible for Communication of the CIVINET CY- EL network.
